Hawaiian geology and the Geologists of Jackson Hole field trip

Presented by John Guslander, Mike Adler, Geologists of Jackson Hole.

Several members of Geologists of Jackson Hole left in November to investigate the geology and volcanoes on the big island of Hawaii. Drs. Robert I. Tilling and Richard Hazlett, two people who literally wrote the books on this area, led the expedition. Mike Adler and John Guslander will discuss what was learned on the trip at the Tuesday night library talk. Hawaii is even younger than the Tetons having risen above the surface only a few hundred thousand years ago. We will present many photos showing this growth. Like all mountains including our own, Hawaii is eroding away as it grows with massive landslides that we will also show. We saw telescopes on the peaks that have provided hard evidence of the black hole at the center of the Milky Way. This is also the center of a cultural conflict. Hawaii like Wyoming is the site of recent contact between old aboriginal societies and European settlers. Along the way we also show the beauty and many climates on this “Big” island.  Video
