Presentation: “Little Ice Age Glaciers of the Teton Range”

Like many ranges in the northern Rockies, the Teton Range has several small glaciers in various settings. These moving ice masses indicate century-scale climate regimes, transcending the Little Ice Age  (ca. 1350 to 1850) and the modern regime up to today.

We often use the term “glacial” to describe very slow things, including bureaucracies. But on geologic time scales, glaciers – especially alpine ones– are young and fast. Research on alpine glaciers has been sporadic, and tying them to past and future climates is likewise young and fast.

This presentation will review pertinent research by others, present century-scale climate data for the upper Snake River Basin, and show some examples of changes in Teton Range glaciers since the 1890’s in context to this climate and other proxy data. The latter two topics are new and part of an ongoing project.
