Glacial Geology of Jackson Hole
1 Day Members Only Field Trip

Time: 7:30 am to 3:30 pm

- Send your email on July 16 at 6:00 pm. Not before. First come, first on the trip.
- Limit: 24 participants
What to expect:
We will make 4 to 5 stops throughout the day with a picnic lunch. There will be several short walks of <0.5 miles. Because of parking considerations this time of year – you must be willing to carpool.
Logistics:
7:20: Meet at the 250 N Cache St. parking lot and organize carpools. leave at 7:30. We will send a list of participants in advance so you can start organizing this. Drive to first stop ~30 minutes (longer with traffic, as with all drive time estimates below).
STOP 1: Jenny Lake – Rock Beach
- Arrive 8:15; Park in large lot near General Store and walk to Rock Beach; General overview of glacial history and discussion of moraines, lake records, past seismic events, landslides; Depart 9:45; Drive to next stop ~10–15 minutes.
STOP 2: String Lake
- Arrive 10:00; Park in String Lake parking lot and walk to lake front; Discussion of Teton fault, offset glacial landforms, slip rates; Depart 11:15; Drive to next stop ~15 minutes.
STOP 3: Taggart Lake moraines + Lunch
- Arrive 11:30; Park at Cottonwood Creek picnic area and start with early lunch break; Post-lunch walk ~0.5 miles to terminal moraine and boulders; Discussion moraine dating methods and ages; Depart 1:40; Drive to next stop ~20 minutes.
STOP 4: Snake River Overlook
- Arrive 2:00; Pinedale glacial phases in Yellowstone and Jackson Hole, terraces, and outwash; Depart 2:40; Drive to last stop ~20 minutes.
STOP 5: Grand Teton National Park sign on U.S. 191 (optional – if time allows)
- Arrive 3:00; Views across Jackson Hole; Wrap up discussion of Bull Lake and Pinedale glacial history; Depart 3:20; Drive back to parking lot in Jackson ~10 minutes.
3:30: End at the 250 N. Cache St. parking lot.
