The Prize: This spectacular 7-inch fluorite specimen displays the remarkable color zoning that has made Chinese fluorites some of the most sought-after mineral specimens in the world. Bands of emerald-green, sea-green, lavender, violet, and honey-yellow flow through the crystal in sweeping layers, creating a natural stained-glass effect when illuminated. The specimen’s transparency allows light to penetrate deep into the crystal, revealing intricate internal growth patterns and dramatic color contrasts that change with viewing angle and lighting.

Raffle rules:

  • Must be present to win.
  • All attendees will receive one ticket.
  • Drawing will be at 6:00 pm in the library auditorium.

Presentation: “The Last Teton Ice: How Rock Glaciers Will Shape the Future of Water and Biodiversity” by Dr. Scott Hotaling, Utah State University

The Teton Range is one of the iconic mountain ranges in the western United States. But the range is also changing rapidly due to recent warming. Through the lens of long-term research, Professor Scott Hotaling will describe the recent past and
future of ice in the Teton Range and how its fate is intimately tied to the fate of aquatic ecosystems and human communities in the region. In addition to scientific data and narrative, the talk will also contain a number of videos to connect the audience to the places and concepts being described. It will be an engaging presentation that is suitable for any age.

Scott Hotaling is a professor in the Department of Watershed Sciences at Utah State University. A climbing ranger turned mountain scientist, Dr. Hotaling brings a unique perspective to research and extension by integrating long-term data
collection, storytelling, and his own experiences. You can see more of his research and follow along on his Mountain Futures YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@mountainfutures/
