Wyoming’s Geoheritage

September 21st (Tuesday), 6 p.m., Via Zoom (online) & Live at St. John’s Episcopal Church- Open to Public. Presentation: “Wyoming’s Geoheritage”, Presented by Carol Frost, University of Wyoming

Wyoming’s rich geologic heritage includes iconic fossils, abundant energy resources, ancient rocks created when our planet was young, and sweeping vistas of mountains and plains. Visitors and residents appreciate the natural beauty of the state but few know the geologic stories behind its varied landscapes. This talk is an exploration of Wyoming’s geologic heritage and its aesthetic, cultural and historical, ecological, economic, recreational, and scientific value.

The presentation will use examples from John McPhee’s book, “Rising from the Plains”, which recounts McPhee’s travels crisscrossing Wyoming in the company of geologist J.D. Love. The places described in McPhee’s book represent an opportunity to explore Wyoming’s geologic heritage by combining geologic and human histories. I propose that this approach can deepen residents’ and visitors’ understanding and appreciation of the state’s geologic heritage by presenting the fascinating geology and human connections to our Wyoming landscapes.

The audience will be invited to join in brainstorming interesting geoheritage sites in Wyoming that could deepen residents’ and visitors’ understanding and appreciation of the state’s geologic heritage. The goal is to help others view the geologic landscape differently, develop a deeper connection to our state, and be motivated to learn more and become more knowledgeable custodians of our planet.
