Mike Scher

Board Member

Mike Scher was born in 1956 in the East and has an undergraduate degree in Chemistry. His most recent career was running a chemical manufacturing company in New York.  Earlier in his career, he taught chemistry, earth science, and physical sciences at the middle school and high school level.  For 5 years he taught a broad range of outdoor education programs, including his first trip to the Tetons (1980), which was when he was leading backpacking trips for teens around the Rockies.  He and his wife and two sons moved to Jackson in 2003. He is passionate about the outdoors and spends time hiking, camping and skiing; looking at and studying the geology is always part of those outdoor experiences. Since 2008 he has been a volunteer backcountry ranger for Grand Teton National Park.

He loves the sciences, especially earth science; he has enjoyed and is honored to be a GJH board member. Mike is interested in and has read about a broad spectrum of geologic topics, with a particular passion for fossils which along with minerals seem to fill most of his house! He has served on the Board for over 10 years and contributes to the generation and organization of public program speakers and school programs. Mike has taught many classes on local geology to school groups and local guides. He has presented numerous Tuesday night GJH public presentations including his first one on local fossils in 2012. He has led many field trips and looks forward to many more.
