Old Bill's Fun Run 2020
Please Contribute to Old Bill’s Fun Run
For Geologists of Jackson Hole, August through September 18, 2020
Please remember us during this year’s Old Bill’s Fun Run. Any funds raised will be used to directly support the core mission of the organization founded in the mid-1980’s:
To inform and educate our members and community about earth science related matters – their broad scope and importance to all of us.
We are proud of our history serving the Jackson community. In 2019, we brought speakers from universities and other organizations to speak at three public lectures each month about research related to our physical world and beyond. More than 1800 people attended our meetings in 2019.
Due to the closure of the Library and Senior Center by COVID-19, we have continued our lecture programs on ZOOM once a month. We will return to three lectures each month as soon as it is safe to do so. We may be able to continue the ZOOM coverage even after the library meetings resume.
Prior to the virus, we worked in local schools to support teachers and provide classroom and field trip educational experiences about the physical world around us. We taught over a thousand local students in 2019. Our members also give talks to various local community organizations ranging from civic groups to scouting organizations.
We led member field trips to an Idaho mining district, Dinosaur National Monument, INL and Intermittent Springs, and held our famous Member BBQ.
Last year due to your support through Old Bill’s we were able to give our first scholarship to a graduating Jackson Hole High School minority female to support her study of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Wyoming. We plan to continue granting scholarships each year.
Our website geologistsofjacksonhole.org is very active. Over the past year, over 21,500 people visited it more than 34,000 times. Many useful links can be found on our website including past YouTube videos of our live presentations, also links on earthquakes, volcanism, emergency preparedness and more. Because there are often overflow crowds at the Teton County Library, we videotape most of our public lectures. These videos can be viewed at no cost, through our channel on YouTube. A link can be found on our website and in our monthly newsletter.
The videos on YouTube include 149 programs that have received over 90,000 views from 22 countries in the last five years. Forty-nine percent of our viewers are 18-34 years old, 39% are 45-65 and 12% are 65+. Due to COVID-19, the number of subscribers viewing tripled the first half of 2020.
Specifically, your Old Bill’s donations over the last several years have allowed us to enhance our ability to bring high quality, out-of-state speakers to our community and increase our in-school participation. This year we were able to give our first scholarship to a deserving student!
Thank you for joining us in supporting the Geologists of Jackson Hole through Old Bill’s.
